Breathe weekend - a combo of science, spirituality Breathe weekend - a combo of science, spirituality, wellness and connection around family mental illness - expanded my mind, lifted me up, and broke my heart. It was validating to be around people who really understand this impossible life: the heartbreak, stress, instability, trauma and moral injury. For just a couple of days, I didn’t feel so alone, and I could really say “no, I’m not okay” and be heard.

Lectures, small groups, music, yoga, art, meditation, breath work, therapy, delicious food, prayer, s’mores, gifts and even a silent disco - it was a full weekend. But two events particularly affected me. There was a hut where we hung photos of our children - a stark reminder that these are not just stories, these are actual children. Every time I even peeked in the window, I cried💔. And the last event, right before saying goodbye, someone prayed our children’s names out loud as we released butterflies. Skye 🦋 Elijah 🦋

Thank you to the brave moms who shared their family’s stories. And thank you to @kaywarren75 for using her personal pain to be an advocate and voice for mental illness, to create a space for connection and hope. And for reminding me to…..breathe.

I am present, not on my phone even though I have b I am present, not on my phone even though I have been waiting a long time. I watch the workers do their thing, a finely choreographed burger assembling dance. To my right is a young Black man, probably my son’s age, a dirty backpack, dirty clothes, dirty hair, tender, beautiful face. Hesitate of his place in line, a few bills clutched in his hand. He could be my son. I move to buy him lunch but a woman closer beat me to it. I gently touch her arm, “I saw that” and give her my best crinkly-eyed masked-covered smile. My number is called and I deliver burgers to my daughter, too choked up to speak, memories of another time flooding my mind.
I read something the other day about a living obit I read something the other day about a living obituary. This can work two ways:

1. You tell the people you love all the good things about them today, while they are still alive, instead of when they are dead.

2. You imagine what you want people to say when you die, and then live your life accordingly. What do you want your legacy to be? Who are you really and how do you want to be remembered? As kind, loyal, loving and trustworthy? If so, be that person now.

Donnie was that person - kind, loyal, loving and trustworthy. This photo is from my wedding, 29 years ago. I believe when you participate in someone’s wedding it is not just a testament to your friendship - it’s a responsibility. You are witness to a life-long commitment and as such, you are pledging to be the village that holds that marriage together. He absolutely loved my family and held us together. I will forever be grateful. He leaves behind a legacy of true friendship and deep commitment with the love of his life. May we all have a living obituary such as @donnieboofficial 😢💔
